Flights
Aviation is roughly 2-3% of global CO₂ emissions and rising. Fewer, longer trips have lower emissions per day than short frequent trips. Where trains are competitive, we say so.
Carbon offsets
Most carbon-offset programs deliver less than they claim. We treat them as a partial mitigation, not absolution. Verified programs (Gold Standard, VCS) are the minimum bar.
Slow travel
Longer stays, fewer transfers, less internal flying. Slow travel produces less emissions, better travel writing, and - usually - better trips.
Accommodation impact
Water use, energy, and single-use plastics vary enormously between properties. Certifications (Green Key, EarthCheck) are one signal; local ownership is another.
Our own operations
IST World's editorial team is distributed to reduce commuting. Site infrastructure runs on renewable-energy-powered data centers. We publish an annual accounting of our emissions.
