Responsible Travel

How IST World thinks about tourism's impact - on ecosystems, on communities, and on individual travelers.

Overtourism

Some destinations are being loved to death. Where we cover these places, we note the impact, discuss the trade-offs, and highlight less-visited alternatives - without pretending the alternatives are undiscovered.

Cultural sensitivity

Dress codes, religious sites, photography norms, and social taboos are covered plainly in every destination guide. Respect isn't optional.

Fair pay

Guides, drivers, and hospitality workers are often underpaid globally. Where we can, we recommend operators who pay fairly and note the rare cases of clear worker exploitation.

Wildlife tourism

We do not recommend any operation involving direct contact with wild animals - elephant rides, tiger 'temples,' selfie-with-a-sloth setups. This is a firm editorial line.

Community-owned tourism

Where community-owned lodges and cooperatives exist, we recommend them. Money staying local is a legitimate travel outcome.

Traveler responsibility

Ultimately, responsibility falls on the individual traveler. We publish to make it easier to make good choices - not to lecture.
